What is Stock Music

“Stock Music Copyright Clearances and Licenses” Title Graphic.
Stock Music Libraries make copyright clearance for use in your production very easy. The music library owners hold the copyright for all the music in their catalogue. They can provide and license the music for synchronization rights directly to you in one of several licensing options, including -

Laser Drop:
This licensing option was originally known as "needle-drop"; referring to the act of lowering a phonograph needle onto a record to place the music in a production. With this option you would typically have access to music either through online download or physical CDs. You would send in a license application each time you used the Stock Music in a production, and remit a license payment.

The advantage to a per-use approach like this is that you have a very low initial cash investment, and you only pay for what you use. This Stock Music licensing option is very helpful if you budget music use as an expense in each production that you create.

Blanket Production License:
Another version of the pay-per-use option is the Blanket Production License. This will allow you to use any amount of music in your production for one fee, rather than paying for each individual piece of Stock Music in the production. This option is cost-effective for single productions that use a lot of music.

Annual Blanket License:
The Annual Blanket License establishes a single licensing fee that permits the unlimited use of music in an unlimited number of productions that are created during the term of the license - in this case - twelve months. Some versions of the Blanket License may run for more than one year.

If you use a lot of music, an Annual Blanket License may be your best choice. Some Stock Music Libraries will provide new releases throughout the year at no charge, and others will permit you to refresh your music choices during the year. Any productions that are completed during the term of the license are licensed for the life of the production.

The Westar Music Library provides a wide variety of professional quality music that can be leased through either laser drop, blanket production or annual blanket licensing arrangements.

Buyout / Royalty Free Stock Music:
The Buyout or Royalty Free Stock Music option is in essence a long-term or lifetime license. You pay up front for the CDs and for synchronization rights for the music. You do not need to license the productions in which you use the music, there is no annual license fee and there are no additional fees when you use the music in your productions. But you do need to understand that you don't own the music and you are not permitted to give the music to anyone else for their productions, or to resell the music in an unsynchronized format.

Royalty Free Stock Music is most often used in commercials, multimedia projects & presentations. You can continue to use the music in any number of presentations that you create.

While it may appear that all licensing purchase options work via the honor system, in reality each Stock Music Library vigorously protects its proprietary material, and expects producers to use library music responsibly. In all cases, as a producer who uses licensed music, make sure that you receive a written license that outlines your rights and responsibilities.
